Preschoolers love dressing up right? Today was costume day and surrounded by many Elsa’s and an Anna and an Olaf and a soccer player and a SWAT team member and a few superheroes, naturally I had to dress up too (even in a small hey, I’m wearing a t-shirt that kinda counts as a costume). Of course I chose to wear this Captain Marvel shirt (which is my absolute favorite cover of Captain Marvel ever when I see it I have to repress giant tears of gratitude and love). Lemme tell y’all, preschoolers are down to ask/talk about anything the conversations about my shirt went like this:
Little girl in an Anna costume: “Who is that on your shirt Miss Ariel?”
Me: “That is Captain Marvel and she is so cool.”
Anna: “She has really pretty hair, can she fly?”
Me: “Yes, she was in the Air Force!”
Anna: “That is awesome!”
Fast forward to this afternoon
Small child: “That’s Captain America!”
Anna: “Nooooo, that’s Captain Maaahrvel. She is a girl superhero and she can fly.”Little Superhero: “Does she have a cape?”
Me: “No but she has a sash and red gloves and boots.”
Little Superhero: “Sash and gloves and boots, I like her costume.”Little Boy dressed as Olaf: “Girls can be superheros?”
Me: “Yep and they are really really good at being superheroes just like boys are.”
Olaf: “Does Captain Marvel make good choices?”
Me: “She does make good choices but sometimes she makes mistakes.”
Olaf: “That’s okay, we all make mistakes Ariel.”Little girl dressed as Rapunzel: “Who is that holding onto Captain Marvel?”
Me: “That is Lieutenant Trouble.”
Rapunzel: “Why is she Lieutenant Trouble?”
Me: “Because she is a little bit of trouble.”
Rapunzel: “Just like me!”Little Boy Dressed as Captain America: “Miss Ariel, who is that on your shirt?”
Me: “That’s Captain Marvel, she is friends with Captain America.”
Little Cap: “Just like you’re my friend right?”
Me: “Of course little dude.”Little Girl dressed as the Hulk: “Is Captain Marvel friends with Hulk too?”
Me: “She is, she is an Avenger just like Hulk and Captain America and Iron Man and Thor.”
Little She-Hulk: “Girls can be Avengers?”
Me: “Yes they can.”
Little She-Hulk: “Yay, I’m a ‘venger, I’m a ‘venger!”Tell me again how boys won’t accept/view/watch/read about female superheros/protagonists?
Lessons for the day representation matters, girls love Captain Marvel and boys do too.
Massive love to the Captain Marvel team, y’all are the greatest.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Little girl dressed as Rapunzel: “Who is that holding onto Captain Marvel?”
